These pots can be used to heat up other pots. Depending upon if the cook wants to keep a dish warm or cook over medium heat the heat source can be a candle for small heat, several coals taken with tongs from the fire, or a can of sterno cunningly hidden in the stem. The little clay tabs have been thickened and can hold above the heat a plate, fry pan, a cooking pot, or a pipkin if they are appropriate for direct heat.
